Set against a flat, open prairie, this photograph shows an antique threshing machine that has been left to rust in the open air. Threshers like this one were once the centerpiece of harvest season, when a crew moved from farm to farm separating grain from straw, often powered by a steam traction engine or a team of horses. Once newer gasoline tractors and combines took over in the early to mid twentieth century, many of these machines were abandoned on fields or pasture edges, where weather slowly broke them down. Images like this one record that shift, turning a working tool of rural life into a quiet monument to how quickly farm technology changed.
