Set against a blanket of snow, this rusted Case steam tractor stands as a reminder of the machines that once powered American farm work before gasoline engines took over. The J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company, founded in Racine, Wisconsin, built steam traction engines in large numbers from the late nineteenth century into the 1920s, and they were typically used to pull threshing machines and to drive belts for sawmills and other stationary jobs. Weathered by years outdoors, the iron body shows the slow decay that followed once these engines were retired, a quiet contrast to the crews and noise of harvest season.
