The subject is a steam tractor, a large, coal- or wood-fired machine that hauled plows and threshing equipment across American farmland before gasoline power took over. The record dates it to 1885 based only on the title, and the caption card gives no date, so treat that year as unconfirmed. The image is a photograph of an engraving from the Case Company collection, and Case, based in Racine, Wisconsin, was one of the best-known builders of steam traction engines in the late 1800s. Because the source is an engraving, it shows how such machines were drawn for catalogs and periodicals of the period.
