Corry, Pennsylvania, a small oil-region town in the state's northwest, is the home named in this color advertisement for the Climax mower, which its maker called "the most complete and perfect mower in the world." New York firm Major & Knapp printed the lithograph sometime between 1869 and 1872, when mechanical mowers were steadily replacing the scythe on American farms. Advertisements like this one used bold color and sweeping claims to win over buyers, so the picture is as much a sales pitch as a record of farm machinery. It also shows how manufacturers marketed new equipment in the years after the Civil War.
