Mules pull the plow here, not a machine, which sets this silkscreen apart on a board about tractors. William H. Johnson made the print around 1940, when he was turning his bold, simplified style toward scenes of rural Black life and farm work. It comes from the records of the Harmon Foundation, which promoted African American artists between the 1920s and 1940s. Its flat planes of color and stylized figures reflect the folk art Johnson admired during his years in Europe.
