Tip Estes is shown at the controls of a tractor near Fowler, a small town in Benton County in west-central Indiana, where the flat, fertile land has long supported grain and livestock farming. The picture was taken in April 1937, in the middle of the Great Depression, when the Farm Security Administration sent photographers across the country to record rural working life. By the late 1930s, tractors were rapidly replacing horses and mules on Midwestern farms, so the scene captures a turning point in agricultural work. The negative is on nitrate film, and it was later transferred to the Office of War Information's overseas division around 1944.
