A mesh screen built around the driver's seat sets this 1930 photograph apart. W.O. Young sits on a tractor at the Lincoln Park Golf Course in Chicago, protected from errant golf balls. Course maintenance equipment of this kind was then a fairly new sight, as mechanized mowing and hauling began replacing horse-drawn work on public links. The picture shows a practical solution to a problem that came with working a tractor on an active course, where players and maintenance crews shared the same ground.
