Titled *Dusty plowing*, this 1943 lithograph shows a field being turned under a haze of dust, a scene that recalls the drought years on the Plains. Bernard Steffen made it under the New York City branch of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, the New Deal program that employed artists to make prints, murals and posters. The stamp in the lower left corner, along with the pencil signature and title, ties the sheet to that program. Lithography suited the project because a single stone could yield many impressions at low cost.
