A First World War poster shows French women plowing the fields under a headline asking American viewers whether they are doing their part. Issued under the United States Food Administration and printed by a New York firm, it framed food production as a wartime duty for people at home, not only for soldiers. With many French men serving at the front, women took over plowing and harvesting, and the poster held up their labor as an example. Its appeal reflects the food conservation drives that Herbert Hoover's agency promoted across the United States in 1917 and 1918.
