Harper's March shows a spring plowing scene, with a team of horses at work in the field and roosters nearby, a pairing that fits the month's association with the start of the farming season. The poster was made to promote a Harper publication in the 1890s, when color lithography was becoming a common way to sell magazines and other goods to the public. Its subject is a reminder of how much field work depended on animal power before mechanized tractors took over, and the plow and team stand in for the labor that shaped rural life in the period.
