Farmer and team of horses sit at the center of this 1876 Centennial lithograph, whose caption, "I Feed You All," states its message plainly. The Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia that year marked the nation's hundredth birthday and showcased agriculture, with reapers and other farm implements drawing large crowds in Machinery Hall. In 1876 horses, not engines, did nearly all field work, so the picture shows how Americans then understood the source of national prosperity. Its place on a tractor board is a reminder that the mechanized farm arrived decades later.
