Two draft horses lean into their harness as a loaded wagon rolls between rows of standing corn, a scene that belongs to the long stretch of American farming before tractors took over most field work. Teams like this one hauled grain, feed and hay across fields and to the barn, and a single pair could do the work that later took a machine and a driver. The board this picture hangs on is devoted to tractors, so the horses here offer a useful point of comparison: they show the labor and animal power that mechanization gradually replaced in the twentieth century. Look closely at the harness and the wagon's wheels to see how much of the farm economy ran on muscle.
