A single ox leans into its harness and drags a plow across the field, a reminder that animal power still did much of the farm work in 1921, even as tractors were beginning to spread across the countryside. The image survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial studio whose pictures were made to be reproduced and sold. Viewers may notice faint streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the slow breakdown of the original coating over time rather than from the scene itself.
