A man guides a horse-drawn plow through a cotton field in North Carolina, in a photograph the caption card dates to about 1902. The copyright line credits D.A. Tompkins, a promoter of Southern industry whose name is attached to many views of the region's farms and mills from this period. Cotton dominated much of the state's farmland then, and it was worked mainly by hand and animal power, often by Black tenant farmers and sharecroppers. Set against this board's tractor theme, the scene shows the animal-powered field work that machines were only beginning to replace.
