A horse-drawn wagon pulled by a team of four mules is the focal point here, with a worker spreading fertilizer across a Georgia field. Teams of mules were a common sight on Southern farms well into the twentieth century, when they handled plowing, hauling, and the spreading of commercial fertilizer that many farmers relied on to restore worn-out cotton and corn land. Gallery placement under tractors is worth noting: the picture captures the period just before mechanized equipment took over much of this work, so it documents the transition in farm labor as well as a single task.
