Dogs pulling a plow at Hay River in the Northwest Territories is an unusual sight, since dog teams are better known for hauling sleds than for working soil. The scene reflects how settlers in the subarctic made do with the animals they had, because horses were costly to keep and hard to feed through long winters. The print comes from a set of Canadian Department of the Interior photographs that later entered the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, a group of images chosen to document daily life in distant places. Look closely at the harness and the small furrow to see how modest the effort was.
