Few early stereographs show a machine doing field work, which makes this card unusual: an "automobile plow" at work in England around 1905, when steam and gasoline traction were just beginning to challenge the horse on farms. Early self-propelled plows of this kind were heavy, costly experiments, often built around steam engines that hauled a plow across the field by cable or drove it directly. Stereo cards like this one were sold to a broad public, so the image also offers a glimpse of how novelty machinery was presented to ordinary viewers as the future of farming.
