The two advertisements on this card stand out for their pairing: one promotes H.S. Whittemore & Brother's agricultural implements, illustrated with a plow, and the other advertises Morgan Curle & Burnham's planing and moulding mill, along with its sash, blind, and door works. Both ran in the Lynchburg Business Directory, a town directory of the mid-nineteenth century, when local firms bought small wood-engraved blocks to stand out on a printed page. Lynchburg, on the James River in central Virginia, was a milling and trade center, so ads like these show how farm tools and sawn lumber moved through the town's economy. The engravings were later reused in Richard Edwards' *Statistical Gazette of Virginia*, which is why they appear in the Library of Congress collection.
