Nine engravings gathered under the title *Diggers* each show a different implement for breaking and turning soil, arranged together so the tools can be compared side by side. Plates like these were common in agricultural manuals and encyclopedias of the 18th and 19th centuries, where engravers drew tools in clean outline so that farmers and buyers could study their shapes and parts. Readers could learn to recognize and name equipment without ever seeing it in the field. Together, the group shows how much variety existed among digging tools long before mechanized tractors took over much of the work.
