Theodore R. Davis, a staff artist for Harper's Weekly, sketched this scene of an ox team breaking prairie sod, a task that defined settlement across the Great Plains in the late 1860s. The wood engraving ran in the May 9, 1868 issue of the magazine, which relied on artists like Davis to carry images of the West to readers in the East who had never seen the open grassland. Plows drawn by teams of oxen were the standard tool for turning the tough, deep-rooted prairie soil before farmers could plant crops, so the picture records a moment of hard, slow labor at the edge of settled country.
