Frances Benjamin Johnston probably made this photograph in 1899 at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia, and its title, "Improved method of plowing," points to the school's farm training. Hampton was founded in 1868 to educate freed people and their children, and it paired academic study with trades and agricultural work. Johnston documented the school's students and classes around 1899 and 1900, and her Hampton series was shown at the Paris Exposition of 1900. Her pictures were carefully posed, so they show how the institute presented itself as much as they record everyday school life.
