The title names the Esdraelon plain, the broad valley in northern Palestine that English-language writers of the period used for what Arabic speakers called Marj Ibn Amir and Hebrew speakers called the Jezreel Valley. In the 1920s, a tractor pulling a disc plow was still a novelty on land that had long been worked by animal teams, and the machine marked a shift in how new agricultural settlements there were being built. Notice how the open ground stretches to the horizon, which helps explain why mechanized plowing appealed to planners of large-scale farming.
