Few images from this period show a tractor breaking open the prairie itself, which is what sets this stereograph apart from the many farm scenes of its era. The card, issued by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1916, was one of a large commercial series sold for viewing through a stereoscope in parlors and schoolrooms. By the mid-1910s, gasoline tractors were beginning to replace horse teams on large Plains farms, and South Dakota's deep, dark prairie sod was a prime target for the work. The card offers a useful record of that shift from animal power to machine power.
