A June 1937 negative from Aldridge Plantation in Mississippi shows a tractor driver at work, recorded on nitrate film in a small 2 1/4-inch format. Photographers for the Farm Security Administration documented Southern farm life during the Depression, and by the late 1930s tractors were spreading through Mississippi's cotton country, reducing how many field hands a planter needed. The negative later passed to the Office of War Information, so its record reflects that wartime handling as well as its original purpose. Its compact size is worth noting, since photographers of the period often chose portable cameras that could capture fieldwork quickly.
