A cotton plantation along the Mississippi River is the setting here, a landscape where the river's rich alluvial soil made the Delta one of the most productive cotton regions in the country. Plantations like this one depended on enslaved and, after emancipation, tenant and sharecropped labor to plant, chop, and pick the crop, and the fields and outbuildings in such scenes often reveal how closely the agricultural economy was tied to that labor system. Worth noticing is how the broad, flat fields and the scattered farm buildings signal the scale of production that drove the cotton trade through river ports like New Orleans and Memphis.
