Stoneville, in the Mississippi Delta, was home to a federal agricultural research station, and this picture documents an early attempt to replace hand labor in the cotton fields with a machine. The title places the picker as a 1937 model, though the caption card itself gives no date. Mechanical cotton pickers were still experimental in the 1930s, and the work of inventors and engineers in the South was slowly moving the crop away from the sack-dragging hand harvest that had defined it for generations. The Bureau of Agricultural Engineering, which made the photograph, was documenting such machines as part of that effort.
