A plow turning South Carolina soil is the subject of this wood engraving, drawn from a sketch by James E. Taylor. It appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on October 20, 1866, on page 76. The scene dates from the months after the Civil War and the end of slavery, when Black farmers across the South were working land under new and often uncertain terms. Illustrated weeklies like Leslie's used rural scenes like this one to show readers the postwar countryside, and the print preserves a record of field labor and farm tools from that period.
