This silkscreen with gouache, titled *Deep South*, shows a family in rural life, a subject William H. Johnson returned to often. Johnson, an African American painter who worked in New York and Europe, used bold flat color and simplified forms that suited the print medium. The sheet survives in the records of the Harmon Foundation, which promoted African American artists through exhibitions and awards from the 1920s onward. Its undated production falls between 1939 and 1947, a period when Johnson was focusing on Southern themes.
