The Lewis wagon, drawn by J.S. Vernam and printed in color by Compton, Gibson & Co. of Buffalo around 1854, presents the vehicle as a set of working drawings rather than a finished cart. Its plan and elevation views let a builder study the proportions and construction directly. The sheet was later reproduced in George Cole's compiled volume, *The Contractors Book of Working Drawings of Tools and Machines*, which gathered such plates for craftsmen. Wagons like this carried goods and farm produce across a growing country, so the careful drafting shows how seriously builders of the period approached their designs.
