Mules pulling a wagon through a field in Georgia tell a story about farming before tractors took over. This picture shows a four-mule team hitched to a wagon as a worker spread fertilizer across the soil, a common sight on Southern farms in the early twentieth century. Fertilizer was costly for many tenant farmers and sharecroppers, and worn-out cotton and corn land in the South depended on it to produce a decent harvest. Mule teams like this one remained the backbone of field work in Georgia well into the 1930s and 1940s, long after machines began appearing on larger operations.
