*Sowing* shows a field worker and a mule team in the work of planting, a subject that recurs in William H. Johnson's rural scenes. The color silkscreen dates to about 1940, not long after Johnson returned to the United States from years in Europe and turned toward American country life. Its record places it among the Harmon Foundation records, the organization that promoted African American artists during the 1930s and 1940s. Viewers may notice how the flat, simplified shapes of the figure, animals, and furrowed ground reflect the bold color that marks his later work.
