A wheat fan and a "Sinclair's Sowing Machine" share this small 1822 woodcut, which pairs two pieces of farm equipment on one sheet. The fan was a hand-cranked winnowing device that blew chaff away from threshed grain, and the sowing machine was a mechanical planter meant to place seed more evenly than hand broadcasting did. Printed in the early nineteenth century, when farm labor was still mostly manual, the sheet reflects a growing interest in mechanizing agriculture. Woodcuts like this one helped explain unfamiliar implements to farmers who had never seen them at work.
