Boys work a horse team through a wheat field near Long Grove in Hardin County, Kentucky, in this photograph Lewis W. Hine made on August 16, 1916. Hine documented child labor for the National Child Labor Committee, which used images like this one to show how farm work pulled children out of school. The caption notes that children were kept from classes for this kind of labor, a common arrangement in rural districts where the school calendar bent around planting and harvest. The picture captures how horse-drawn plowing in the wheat country relied on young workers.
