Set up at the State 4-H Fair in Charleston, West Virginia, in October 1921, this milk booth shows young exhibitors presenting dairy products from their own farm work to fairgoers. Lewis W. Hine made the photograph while working for the National Child Labor Committee, a job that took him across the country to document the lives of children, including many in rural areas. The 4-H movement grew out of early twentieth-century farm youth clubs that taught practical skills such as animal husbandry and food production, and fair exhibits like this one gave those young members a public audience for what they had learned.
