*Krest i traktor* (The Cross and the Tractor) sets a Christian cross against a machine, leaving little doubt about which the artist favors. Published in Moscow in 1930 by the Association of Artists of the Revolution (AKhR), this color lithograph uses caricature, a form Soviet agitation relied on heavily that year. It belongs to the push for collective farming and mechanized agriculture under the first Five-Year Plan, when tractors were promoted as the modern alternative to older village ways and to the church's influence on peasant life. The pairing of peasants and tractors in its catalog record points to the campaign's central message.
