Krest i traktor," or "The Cross and the Tractor," is a 1930 Soviet color lithograph that sets a religious symbol against a machine of modern farming. It was published in Moscow by the Association of Artists of the Revolution, a group whose posters promoted Soviet policy. In 1930 the government was pushing rapid collectivization of agriculture and mechanization of the countryside, while anti-religious campaigns were closing churches and discouraging peasants from practicing their faith. Caricatures like this one relied on simple visual contrast to present the tractor as the future and the cross as the past, a message aimed at rural audiences being asked to join collective farms.
