The title, *Mechanizing the agriculture is our hope*, is itself the poster's message: machines would transform Chinese farming. Dated 1954, it falls in the early years of the First Five-Year Plan (1953-1957). Posters like this one were produced in quantity to push rural workers toward mechanized, collective farming, a goal central to state planning at the time. Notice how the image presents the farmer as a confident participant in a national project rather than a laborer working alone.
