Dusty plowing turns the labor of the field into a cloud of loose soil, and the title names that effect directly. Made in 1943 as a lithograph, the print carries the stamp of the New York City WPA Art Project, one of the Works Progress Administration's federal programs that employed artists during the Depression and supported printmaking. Its focus on plowing reflects a long American interest in rural work, and the dust recalls the Dust Bowl drought and erosion of the 1930s, which had stripped topsoil from many Plains farms. The title and signature are penciled by hand on the sheet.
