Few images from the 1470s show ordinary farm labor as plainly as this woodcut, which makes the plowman its central figure rather than a religious or courtly one. Dated 1471, it belongs to the early years of printed illustration in Europe, when woodblocks were just beginning to appear alongside text. Plowing was the foundation of medieval and early modern farming, and prints like this one helped spread knowledge of rural work to readers who were far removed from the fields.
