A Black farmer guides a horse-drawn plow through a cotton field in North Carolina in this photograph from around 1902. The caption card, whose details the record itself marks as unverified, credits the picture to D.A. Tompkins, a Charlotte-based figure in the textile trade who promoted cotton manufacturing and wrote about the so-called New South. In the early 1900s, cotton was still tilled mainly with animal power and hand labor, much of it performed by tenant farmers and sharecroppers working land they did not own. The scene is a useful reminder that the mechanized equipment that would later replace animal-drawn plows was still decades away for most Southern fields.
