Early gasoline tractors like the one in this picture were a big break from the horse-powered farm of the 19th century. Machines of this kind, often called "gasoline plows," could pull multiple plow bottoms through heavy sod, work that once took a team of many animals. The automobiles parked nearby are worth noticing, since they show how quickly the internal combustion engine was spreading through rural America in the early 20th century. Photographs like this one record a moment when farmers, mechanics and onlookers were still working out what these machines could do.
