Two men are bent over the engine of a tractor in an open field, their attention fixed on the machinery rather than the camera. Pictures like this one belong to a long shift in American farming, when the horse and mule gave way to gasoline-powered tractors during the early decades of the twentieth century. Repairs often happened right where the work was, since a farmer could not easily carry a stalled machine back to town. Images of this kind record the hands-on, improvised upkeep that kept these early machines running through the planting and harvest seasons.
