Few farm pictures in this gallery show machinery as the main subject, and this one puts a tractor squarely in the furrows of a plowed field, with a river running along the edge of the land. The tractor's slow passes over freshly turned soil reflect a shift that reshaped American farming in the early twentieth century, when gasoline-powered tractors began replacing teams of horses and mules on many farms. Riverside fields were often prized for their rich alluvial soil, which made them among the first ground to be mechanized. Look closely at the rows and the tractor's relation to the water to see how much of the farm's work depended on both land and waterway.
