A large gang of disc harrows trails behind a tractor as it works across an open field, a scene that shows how mechanical power was beginning to take over heavy field work around 1900. Discs like these broke up and leveled plowed ground, jobs that had long required teams of horses or mules pulling slower, smaller implements. Early tractors were heavy and often steam-powered, and they could drag wider tools than a team could manage.
