A long market hall stands beside a river, its roofline stretching far along the bank. Markets like this one were the commercial heart of many river towns in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, where farmers, traders and boatmen met to sell grain, produce and livestock. The waterside location mattered: goods could arrive by barge or cart and move quickly to buyers, so the building often grew longer as trade expanded. Look closely at the rows of openings along the facade, which show how ventilation and daylight were planned for working through a busy market day.
