Steel trusses and tall glazed bays carry the roof of this large market hall, the detail that most sets it apart from the wooden barns and farm buildings grouped on the same board. Halls like this were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when iron and steel framing let designers span wide open floors without interior columns. That space gave vendors room for rows of stalls and gave shoppers daylight and clear sightlines to produce, meat and dry goods. The picture is worth studying for its engineering as much as for its market life, since the lattice of braced members overhead shows how the building was meant to stand up to heavy use and crowds.
