Stalls stacked with baskets of produce line the aisles of this market hall, where farmers and dealers once sold their goods under one roof. Covered market halls like this were common in towns across the country during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, giving growers a fixed place to sell and shoppers a sheltered space to browse in any weather. The view down the central aisle shows how the stalls were arranged to funnel customers past rows of goods, a layout that made buying and selling efficient before refrigeration and supermarkets changed how food reached the table.
