Rows of wooden stalls stretch back into the shadowy interior of a covered market, with hand-lettered signs hung above the counters to advertise their wares. Covered markets like this one were a common feature of towns in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when shoppers bought produce, meat, dry goods and household items from many small vendors under one roof. Notice how the overhead light falls through the roof and how the signs compete for attention, a reminder that shopping then depended on printed and painted advertising rather than on packaging or brand names.
