Crowded pushcarts line a busy market street, their owners calling out to shoppers beneath a jumble of hand-painted storefront signs. Markets like this one were a common sight in American cities at the turn of the twentieth century, when immigrant families sold produce, dry goods and secondhand clothing from carts and stalls along the curb. The signs overhead, many in several languages, show how neighborhood commerce was often a community's first point of contact with the wider city. Notice the close packing of carts and the mix of shoppers and sellers, which give a sense of how much daily trade happened in the open street.
