A long glazed hall with a row of arched bays, and a lorry parked at its entrance, makes this one an unusual look at the working side of market life. Covered market halls of this kind were built in many towns to shelter stallholders and produce from rain, and the glass roof and tall arches were meant to bring in daylight over the stalls. The arrival of a motor lorry in the foreground is a useful marker of its period, when road haulage was steadily replacing horse-drawn carts for moving crops and goods to town. Look at how the lorry sits against the building's rhythm of arches, a reminder of how quickly the tools of trade were changing.
